1. How do I calculate the correct size of my tablecloth?

To calculate the right size of your tablecloth, measure the tabletop and add approx. 20–30 cm of overhang per side. We recommend not choosing the tablecloth too large, as it can be uncomfortable if it rests on guests’ laps.
We have prepared a dedicated guide on calculating the correct tablecloth size, including a clear table with table sizes and the corresponding tablecloth dimensions.

2. What is meant by a hemstitch on a tablecloth?

A hemstitch is a decorative seam in tablecloths or linen napkins, created by pulling out warp and weft threads. Linen fabrics are particularly suitable for hemstitching.
Depending on the stitching technique, two to eight threads are removed in one direction and then overstitched, forming elegant decorative patterns. This makes hemstitched tablecloths and napkins especially popular for their refined appearance.

3. What is a mitered corner on a tablecloth?

Mitered corners (also called envelope corners) are diagonal seams at the hems, often found in linen tablecloths and fabric napkins. The seams meet in the direction of the table center and resemble the back of an envelope. Mitered corners give table linens a clean, elegant finish, which makes them highly appreciated in fine dining.

4. What does the term half-linen mean for tablecloths?

Half-linen refers to smooth or patterned fabrics woven from flax and cotton yarns. For a fabric to qualify as half-linen, it must contain at least 40% linen. Half-linen tablecloths combine durability with a soft, pleasant texture.

5. What does damask mean in relation to tablecloths?

Damask is a woven fabric featuring intricate patterns, often floral or geometric, that reflect light beautifully. Damask tablecloths are usually made of mercerized cotton, sometimes with linen, and are admired for their subtle elegance.
In our Libusch table linen shop, we offer only damask tablecloths made from pure cotton or cotton-linen blends. Their refined motifs, often flowers, leaves, or ornamental elements, bring timeless elegance to any dining table.

6. What shrinkage should I expect with my new tablecloth?

New tablecloths made of natural fibers may shrink after the first wash – this is called shrinkage. Depending on fabric quality, shrinkage is usually around 3–5% (a few centimeters).
In our cotton tablecloths (Klara, Padua, all damask tablecloths), this has already been accounted for: they are produced slightly larger than the stated size (this does not apply to pure linen tablecloths).
If you are unsure about the right size, please contact us for advice.

7. How do I properly lay a tablecloth?

First, place a molton underlay on the table to protect the surface and dampen noise from dishes. Then spread the tablecloth evenly over it.
Large tablecloths should ideally be placed by two people to ensure symmetry. The main crease of the tablecloth (the center fold) should run along the middle of the table. Ensure that the overhang is equal on all sides.
For long tables requiring multiple cloths, they should overlap by about 10 cm, and their folds should run in the same direction. Topper cloths (middle cloths) may be placed diagonally across for a festive look, but their corners should never extend beyond the main tablecloth overhang.

8. Which tablecloths and napkins can I buy online?
